The Bedford has been around for a long time and has been through about
every incarnation a hotel can have in NYC. Back in August '99 we said,
"Regretfully, this incarnation is not one of its best."
That was when new management was just embarking on an extensive renovation
project. Things looked promising as they started with the public areas,
redoing the lobby in a richly-furnished, traditional style. It's taken
them awhile, but it seems as if the Bedford is back on track to being
a pretty good New York City hotel. Trying to hark back to the days
when F Scott Fitzgerald or the Roosevelts (Eleanor and Franklin) might
visit, the last remodeling has spiffed up the rooms with a, hmm, let's
call it "hotel-traditional" decor. The furnishings themselves
are not high-end, think mid-scale motel, but are comfortable enough
to return to after a day or night on the town. Some folks might be
taken aback calling a converted closet a kitchenette, but this is
just what many Manhattan apartment dwellers have as their full kitchen
facilities; it's enough to make coffee and tea, simple snacks and
the like.
